每次上课前,Thomas 总会问他一句:“Joe,are you happy today?”

01、Four years at KCS:A warm journey of growth.
Four years ago, Joe entered KCS as a seed full of curiosity and unease about the future. Today, he stands tall like a tree, with deep roots in this community. He is a leader on the basketball court, the heart of his “F4” friend group, an explorer in math and physics, and currently the student with the most college offers. Behind these labels lies a story of growth, warmth, and perseverance.
02、On the basketball court,he's not just the captain, but the team's anchor.
Since childhood, Joe has been called a "prodigy" for his academic and athletic abilities. What truly sets him apart, however, is his "in-depth analysis" of basketball. For him, basketball is not just a hobby; it's a window to explore the physical world.
He often breaks down dribbling, shooting, and dunking in game videos, using A-level physics to analyze the principles behind these movements. "Sports are not just physical actions; there's a lot of science behind them," he says.
In the school team, Joe grew from a regular player to the core of the team, ultimately becoming captain. In the "King’s Cup" finals in Hangzhou, despite biased refereeing, he stayed calm and composed. As the game reached a crucial moment, he accurately predicted the defender's jump timing, adjusted his shot rhythm, and paused mid-air to avoid a second defender, sinking the ball smoothly into the basket. That shot boosted the entire team's morale, leading them to victory. As captain, Joe knew his responsibility went beyond scoring—he focused on lifting the team's spirit. Before games, he often led chants to inspire and strengthen the sense of unity: "1, 2, 3, Kings!"
For Joe, basketball is more than a sport—it's how he understands the world and connects with his teammates. Few know, however, that his leadership qualities were not innate. Early on, after a mistake during a game, he stayed late one cold winter night to practice shooting, despite the biting wind and soaked shirt. In that moment, he realized: "A true leader isn't one who never makes mistakes, but one who faces them and rises again."
03、F4 Friendship Circle:He’s the "always there" friend.
Joe has never been one to go with the flow; he has always stood out with his unique personality, expressing his opinions and inspiring those around him. He formed a close-knit group called "F4" with a few friends, and they were nearly inseparable. Whether in class, playing basketball, studying late, or debating whether pizza should have yogurt, they were always together. Joe easily sparked conversation, whether sharing an interesting idea in class or leading a discussion on math problems during break. He’s not just a friend but the group's pillar.
The most unforgettable experience for Joe and his "F4" team was their first project making water rockets. It was their first time truly working together, facing challenges as a team. As Joe put it, "This was our first project as a group, and it was meaningful." They decided to launch the water rocket using air pressure principles, with each team member contributing their strengths.
Joe and his "F4" team’s most memorable experience was building a water rocket together. "We borrowed a hot glue gun from our art teacher and built the rocket by hand," Joe recalls. Each team member played to their strengths—Joe designed and built the rocket, while others worked on the English report and glue application. "Max was our engineer with the glue," Joe says.
Through this project, they learned the power of collaboration, and their rocket soared high. "It was our first time turning teamwork into action, and everyone’s contribution led to great success," Joe adds. They not only learned about aerodynamics but also deepened their bond as a team.
Academically, Joe loves helping his friends solve problems, especially in math and physics. With his sharp logical thinking, he simplifies complex concepts effortlessly. "Subjects are like tools in life; many problems can be easily solved with them," he says. His classmates affectionately call him the "King of Application," as he skillfully uses academic knowledge to explain everyday phenomena.
04、Explorer of Math and Physics:He expresses his love for theworld through formulas.
Joe's passion for math and physics began in eighth grade when he first encountered calculus. "Math isn't just cold formulas; it's a language for understanding the world," he says. He discovered that velocity (v) is written as ds/dt, and acceleration (a) as dv/dt—symbols that reveal the laws of the universe.
At KCS, Joe deepened this interest, excelling in AMC12, UKMT, and the UK Physics Olympiad, while also joining the "Student Leader Physics Exchange." He worked with peers to calculate satellite orbits using Excel and simulate space missions in Kerbal Space Program 2. For Joe, math and physics are more than subjects; they are a way of life, helping him analyze everything from basketball trajectories to volleyball spikes. Each complex problem is an opportunity to use mathematical language to uncover the principles behind every phenomenon.
On his academic journey, Joe received invaluable guidance from Mr. Pan and Thomas. Mr. Pan, his math mentor, provided clear insights that helped him avoid unnecessary detours during competition preparation. Thomas, on the other hand, deeply influenced his approach to physics, teaching him to tackle complex problems with a more systematic mindset. Before every lesson, Thomas would ask, "Joe, are you happy today?" This simple question became a warm ritual for Joe, reminding him that, despite academic challenges, his well-being always comes first. The support of these two teachers not only advanced his knowledge but also strengthened his resolve for further studies.
05、Warmth of the Village:Igniting Dreams Through Running
Joe’s warmth extends beyond campus. During the summer, he volunteered at a rural school in Sichuan, where, despite limited resources, the children's thirst for knowledge deeply moved him.
In the first-grade class, Joe made learning fun with humor and brought candy to reward the students' efforts. The most challenging was the seventh-grade math lesson, where he creatively acted as an accelerating car to help students understand abstract formulas. With each run, he hoped the students could feel the speed and dynamics of math. Afterward, seeing over 20,000 steps on his pedometer, he felt a sense of fulfillment like never before.
When he left the school, the children gave him a stack of handmade cards filled with thanks and well-wishes. Seeing these cards, Joe couldn't hold back his tears. In that moment, he deeply felt that his efforts had been appreciated, and it reinforced his belief in using knowledge to change the lives of others.
05、His future:Carrying the spirit of KCS to greater heights.
Joe's story is a vivid embodiment of the spirit of KCS. Here, every student is encouraged to explore their potential and pursue their dreams. Whether it’s academic breakthroughs, athletic perseverance, or warm community contributions, KCS provides the strongest support for them.
In the interview, Joe summed up his feelings about KCS with three words: "care, challenge, growth." He said, "KCS is a school filled with care, where teachers are always concerned about the growth and development of each student, offering continuous support and encouragement." The care at KCS is reflected in every detail. Whether it's the patient guidance from admissions teacher Ms. Tu, the precise advice from math teacher Mr. Pan, or the systematic thinking training from physics teacher Mr. Thomas, every teacher uses their expertise and passion to help students find their direction. Joe recalled, "Ms. Tu always gave me the warmest encouragement and the most practical advice when I felt lost. She taught me that the college application process isn't just about getting offers, it's a journey of self-discovery."
When talking about the spirit of KCS, Joe said, "For me, the KCS spirit is about passing the torch." He took on the responsibility from the senior before him, carrying a deep affection for KCS and determined to pass on this spirit to the next generation. He hopes that whether it's the volleyball team, the basketball team, or academic exploration, the KCS spirit will continue to thrive. Each student's growth story is like the continuation of this spirit, becoming an important part of the KCS family.
KCS is more than just a school; it’s a place where dreams take root and grow. Here, students are not only nourished with knowledge but also gain strength and growth through care and challenges. Everyone finds their own path and discovers their boundless potential. As Joe said, "KCS gave me the courage and strength to chase my dreams and helped me become a better version of myself."
This journey of growth
does not end with graduation
It is simply the beginning of a new chapter...
The story of youth continues.
Let’s look forward to the next graduate, who will share their own chapter with you...
