During their ETW (Exploring the World) unit, "Building A Village", Prep5 pupils turned their attention to their city, inquiring:"Where did Chengdu originate, and where is it headed?"
Driven by this guiding question, on 21st March, pupils visited the Chengdu Planning Exhibition Hall. Using an interdisciplinary approach, they engaged with the city's 3,000-year history, exploring the secrets behind the "Land of Abundance" through hands-on exploration.
From the splendour of the ancient Shu Kingdom to the dynamic modernity of today's metropolis, Chengdu's millennia-spanning evolution came alive through immersive learning. With expert guidance, pupils discovered how natural forces shaped the Sichuan Basin's temperate climate and fertile plains, while the towering Longmen and Qionglai mountain ranges to the northwest imbued the region with grandeur and mystique. A key focus was the Dujiangyan Irrigation System – a 2,300-year-old hydraulic marvel that nurtured Chengdu's agricultural prosperity. As pupils marvelled at the ingenuity of ancient engineers, they grasped how geography and human innovation intertwine to propel a civilization's progress.
The interactive "free exploration" session ignited lively debates as pupil's working together in groups to analyse historical maps and urban blueprints across dynasties. Pupils made striking observations: Chengdu's trajectory – from military stronghold to economic hub, agrarian society to smart metropolis – was consistently driven by wisdom and innovation. Through collaborative discussions and critical analysis of primary sources, pupils honed their historical inquiry skills and critical thinking, highlighting the power of project-based and inquiry-based learning methods.
This transdisciplinary study which integrated history, geography and social sciences, has enriched the ETW curriculum while also enhancing pupils' holistic abilities. By examining the interplay between urban development, natural environments and societal change, pupils re-evaluated their hometown through a global lens, embodying the school's educational philosophy of being"rooted in China with a global outlook". Throughout this process, pupils' cross-cultural awareness and civic consciousness were subtly nurtured, contributing to their growth as global citizens.
