TheIntegrated Devices, Electronics, And Systems (IDEAS) Group of ETH Zurich invites applications for one PhD position in the field of integrated photonics for next-generation communication, sensing, such as datacenter, 5G/6G, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), and biomedical applications.

This PhD position focuses on the designs, implementations, and demonstrations of integrated circuit with new circuit topologies and system architectures for integrated electronics/photonics.

Potential topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  1. Optical transceiver for next generation datacenter communication
  2. Optical phased array for free-space optical communication and sensing
  3. Electronic/photonic co-designs
  4. Compound semiconductor circuit designs and co-integration with photonics
  5. Microwave-photonics for 6G communication
  6. Integrated photonics for bioelectronics and biosensors

Project background

The ETH IDEAS Group, led by Prof. Hua Wang, is a world-leading research groupin the field of integrated circuits and systems for next-generation wireless communication, sensing, and various emerging technology applications. Our current and past PhD students regularly publish at flagship conferences and journals and have found carrier opportunities both in top universities and industry.

The ETH IDEAS Group is part of the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (D-ITET). More information can be found on thegroup website.

These PhD positions are jointly funded by EU grants, Swiss national grants, as well as ETH Zurich internal funding. The research involves close collaborations with industry and university groups in Switzerland, EU, and US.

Job description

You will be responsible for the architecting, designing, prototyping, and testing of novel electronic/photonic integrated circuits and/or systems using advanced IC technologies. You will be responsible for performing packaging and building measurement setups. Also, you will be responsible for the project meetings, reporting, scientific publications, conference/seminar presentations, and involving in proposal writing. Further, you will be expected to facilitate the teaching and occasionally deliver lectures in English at ETH Zurich.

Profile

  • Excellent moral character and mature/healthy personality
  • MS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Research and publication track record in silicon photonics/nano-photonics is a plus
  • Research and publication track record in analog, mixed-signal, RF, mm-Wave integrated circuit design is a plus
  • Tapeout experience is a plus
  • Relevant industry experience is a plus
  • Independent individual who can both craft and lead new research projects and work collaboratively on team projects
  • Excellent communication skills in English(the IDEAS team’s working language)

About the Project:

The Centre for Star and Planet Formation at the Globe Institute is offering a number of three-year PhD fellowships in the field of cosmochemistry and planetary sciences. The PhD fellowships are available from January 1 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Centre for Star and Planet Formation (Starplan) is a multidisciplinary research centre focused on understanding the formation of planetary systems, including the Solar System, using a multidisciplinary approach that combines astronomy, astrophysics and cosmochemistry. The main focus of these PhD research positions is centered on elucidating the timescales and processes leading to the formation of the Solar System, including the accretion and differentiation of rocky planets, by measurement of isotopic variations in extraterrestrial materials. Qualifications

We seek highly-motivated individuals with a strong background in isotope geochemistry, preferably with experience in mass spectrometry and clean laboratory techniques, to join a dynamic research group and take full advantage of the state-of-the-art isotope facilities that the institution offers to pursue innovative research. These include thermal-ionization and multiple-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometers (Thermo Scientific Triton and Neptune, respectively) as well as ultra-clean laboratories. The candidate must possess the credentials necessary to qualify for the PhD programme at the University of Copenhagen.

Job description

Your key tasks as a PhD fellow at the Faculty are to:

  • Carry through an independent research project under supervision
  • Write scientific articles and the PhD thesis on the grounds of your research project
  • Complete PhD courses or other equivalent education corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS points
  • Obtain experience with teaching or other types of dissemination related to your PhD project
  • Participate in national and international conferences and scientific meetings

Key criteria for the assessment of applicants

Applicants must have qualifications corresponding to a master’s degree related to the subject area of the project or a related field.Please note that your master’s degree must be equivalent to a Danish master’s degree (two years).

Place of employment

The place of employment is at the Centre for Star and Planet Formation, Globe Institute, Øster Voldgade 5-7, 1350 Copenhagen K.

Formal requirements

The position is available for a 3-year period for applicants holding a relevant master´s degree.

The employment is conditioned upon the applicants successful enrolment as a PhD student at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences according to the rules stipulated in the Ministerial order on the PhD programme at the universities (PhD order) from the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Higher Education.

Terms of employment

The position as a PhD fellow is available for a 3-year period.

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organizations. Depending on seniority, the monthly salary begins around DKK 30,700 (approx. 4,100 EUR) (April 2024 level) (taxable) plus pension. The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities (2013).
