1.穷人和富人（the rich and the poor）
英文写作中最常见的“穷人和富人”表达，就是the rich and the poor，the+adj表示一类人，除了用简单的rich和poor之前，外刊中还有一些词汇：
✅富人：the wealthy/ the affluent /the well-off/ the haves
✅穷人：the needy/ the disadvantaged/ the impoverished/ the have-nots
the+adj 表示一类人的时候，后面的谓语动词可以用复数，也可以用单数，但是表示的意思是不同的。后面接is，表示将这类人看成是一个大的群体；后面接are表示一个复数各种人的概念。
此外，the haves and the have-nots是一个固定的搭配，一般是同时使用，不单独拆分使用。
比如：A gap between the haves and have-nots of retail has been growing since the start of the year.（摘自英国太阳报-The Sun）自今年以来，零售业贫富差距一直在扩大
the haves and the have-nots 也可以缩写成the haves and have-nots
除了直接表示“富有”和“贫穷”的概念之外，还有一些表达也可以理解成“穷人和富人”的概念。
✔ the deadbeat：二流子，游手好闲的人
The government ought to think about how to get the money from the deadbeats before raising taxes on those who do pay. （摘自Economist）政府在提高对纳税人征收税款之前，应该考虑一下如何从无业游民那里获取钱财。
✔deep pockets 超级有钱人。字面意思指的是很深的口袋，引申为口袋里钱很多的人，即非常有钱的人。注意这里不是普通有钱人，而是资产深厚的人。
Big company often use its deep pocket as a leverage to initiate price war against competition 大企业通常利用自己雄厚的资金，作为发起价格竞争，打压竞争的砝码。
除了the+adj之外，外刊中也经常用这几个词来表达“有钱”和“没钱”
① make ends meet 收支相抵
这里的ends分别指“收入”和“支出”两端，两端相遇，就是收支相抵
比如：Many entry-level employees struggle to make both ends meet. 很多入职新人只能勉强维持收支相抵。
With the high cost of living, it's tough to make ends meet.
因为生活成本太高了，我们有点入不敷出。
② infinancial hardship/difficulties有经济困难
After experiencing the worldwide pandemic, many countries are in financial hardship. (摘自BBC) 在经历了全球流行的疫情后，很多国家处于经济困境中。
有时候，也可以写成with financial hardship/difficulties, 比如：People with financial difficulties are more likely than average to be poorly-educated people, living on lower incomes and have experience of mental health issues. 经济困难的人更有可能是受教育程度低、收入低、有心理健康问题的人。
③be on a budget 预算不够，省钱（一般都是做后置定语）有时候，还可以写成be on a tight budget预算超级紧张
Because of the general economicclimate, many people may still feel as though theymustmanageon a tight budget.
鉴于整体的经济环境，人们可能仍然觉得他们必须在紧张的预算下度日。
