These days it is commonly cited that parents apply an excessive amount of pressure on their progeny to achieve success. This essay shall explore the cause for this phenomenon, along with giving my opinion that, despite being understandable, it is a deleterious trend.
The prime reason for parents to place an exorbitant amount of pressure on their children to succeed is the overly competitive nature of today’s societies. This competitiveness seems to influence almost every aspect of life, particularly in education, employment and ultimately, in economics. It is thus perfectly natural for parents to be greatly concerned about their child’s future and whether they will be able to thrive and compete, or, as is many parents’ greatest fear, see their children fail and suffer economic deprivation in their lives. As such, parents, especially from the viewpoint of children, are their greatest source of stress.
It is precisely this stress children are made to bear that has a more negative influence on the child than positive. Despite the benefits that can arise from the parental expectations that are foisted upon children, such as higher grades and a greater level of self-discipline, its negative effects can wreak havoc on a child’s psychology. The psychological consequences of heightened stress can have a serious impact not just on a child’s mental state, but even on their physical health, and so parents should seek other ways to motivate their child instead of simply through the application of pressure, (1)a present development which is likely to have adverse outcomes both for the child and society.
In conclusion, the main contributing factor for why parents apply too much pressure on their children is that parents fear for their child’s future, due to competition within many of life’s realms. In my opinion, this pressure can have some benefits, nevertheless, the trend of applying too many expectations is overwhelmingly unhealthy both for child and society.
