Eat corns ≠ 吃玉米
笔者刚登陆温哥华时,看到路旁广告“Locally Grown Corn”。后来,某堂课上,我让学生以My New Life in Vancouver为题写篇作文。
某生写出这样的句子,Ever since I came to Vancouver, I have always enjoyed eating corns because they are so sweet. 究竟“吃玉米”是eat corn还是eat corns?孰是孰非?
事实上,corn的确有“玉米”的意思,但是一定是不可数名词,一定不能在词尾加s。如:
1)Corn is an important crop of our country.
2)They gathered corn from the fields.
3)The cows were in the field, eating corn. corn
还有“鸡眼”的意思,是可数名词,可加不定冠词,也可在词尾加s。
如:
1) The poor man has a bad corn on his left foot.
2) The podiatrist (足医) removed Henry's painful corns.
所以,eat corn s≠ 吃玉米,而是“吃鸡眼”。味道如何?你品!你细品!
