AR and VR for heart surgery
UNSW Sydney | Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering
截止日期:全年可申
博导:Dr Susann Beier
资助的博士项目(全球学生)
项目描述:
About the Project
Heart valves often become weak with old age, previously a common cause of death. Open heart surgery has been too invasive in the past.
However, a new minimally invasive procedure (called TAVI) has now made this intervention safer and more accessible, helping many affected patients worldwide live longer, better quality lives. Still, the success of the surgery largely depends on the quality of the medical imaging during the implant of the new value, which is 2D, greyscale and often has a poor spatial and temporal resolution. Immersive technologies such as AR and VR have rapidly emerged in recent years, but their translation into the surgery room remains fictional.
This PhD will explore how AR and VR technology can be integrated as tools to assist live surgical TAVI procedures. The ideal candidate has a strong programming background and experience with immersive technologies. Strong problem-solving skills, motivation and good communication, and a passion for health technologies are required.
This interdisciplinary PhD is an excellent opportunity for a postgraduate student to pursue world-leading and novel research of significant translational impact, offering various career paths and stimulating intellectual challenges.
The project will bring together leading experts from creative technologies, engineering and medicine as a supervisory and advisory team as part of an international, dynamic, and thriving team based in Sydney, Australia. We value collaboration, inclusivity, and excellence. Weekly group and individual meetings will allow you to excel in your work. For more details, please see www.svmgroup.org.
Selection criteria:
A GPA higher than 3.6/4.0, 90 (for international students), or WAM >75 for Australian residents
Graduated from a top 300 global University for their under- or postgraduate study (QS, Times or Shanghai ranking)
Ideally, have at least one journal paper or international conference paper
Meet the UNSW admission requirements, including English language tests (minimum of 6.5 in all subcategories and an overall minimum of 7)
Female applicants are highly encouraged, and a competitive merit-based additional top-up may be available.
Please apply with your CV, references and cover letter stating your final GPA or WAM for all degrees and addressing all the selecting criteria to s.beier@unsw.edu.au.
Funding Notes
Fully funded opportunity - $35,000 AUD tax-free p.a. for 3.5 years with a possibility for an annual $10,000 tax-free top-up.

About the Project
Location
Renewable Energy, Department of Engineering, Penryn Campus, Cornwall The University of Exeter’s Department of Engineering is inviting applications for a PhD studentship fully-funded by the Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy to commence on 8 January 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
For eligible students the studentship will cover Home or International tuition fees plus an annual tax-free stipend of at least £18,622 for 3.5 years full-time, or pro rata for part-time study.
Project Description
The project is part of a recently funded EPSRC project in the area of hydrogen integration into solar energy systems. With the discovery of Perovskite solar cells, the highest efficiency of a solar panel achieved is over 30%, however, such technology suffers from long-term stability. In comparison, silicon and other thin film-based solar technology provide higher stability. The efficiency of Si-based solar panels is achieved above 25%.
Therefore, a large part of the solar spectrum is lost in various other forms. In addition, solar panels require a large amount of area, providing challenges with limited space. Therefore, manipulating the solar spectrum in such a way that such a system can be used for other applications while generating electrical power is beneficial. In recent times, photovoltaics in the agriculture field have become attractive solutions for generating electricity while maintaining agricultural growth.
This project will aim to design and develop a semi-transparent solar panel greenhouse for hydrogen generation. While semi-transparent solar panel offers lesser electrical efficiency, it provides adequate light management for agricultural use.
The project will identify a range of semi-transparent solar photovoltaic modules which can transmit part of the visible wavelength for plant growths while maintaining inside temperatures for warmer environments. Manipulation of morphological structure and its effect on the overall efficiency of the small-scale solar devices will be characterised through A+A+A+ solar simulators in the University.
In addition, the materials will be characterised through SEM, TEM, XRD for optimising their properties. The overall system will also be integrated into a suitable hydrogen generator for the use of heavy vehicles in the agricultural industries. Funding is primarily for UK nationals. International applicants need to be aware that you will have to cover the fees difference, your student visa, healthcare surcharge and other costs of moving to the UK to do a PhD.
Entry requirements
Applicants for this studentship must have obtained, or be about to obtain, Upper second class (or lower second Class with Industrial Experience) or higher UK Honours degree, in Material/Environmental Science, or the equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK, in an appropriate area of science or technology. If English is not your first language you will need to meet the required level as per our guidance at https://www.exeter.ac.uk/pg-research/apply/english/
How to apply
In the application process you will be asked to upload several documents
• CV
• Letter of application (outlining your academic interests, prior research experience and reasons for wishing to undertake the project).
• Research proposal
• Transcript(s) giving full details of subjects studied and grades/marks obtained (this should be an interim transcript if you are still studying)
• Two references from referees familiar with your academic work. If your referees prefer, they can email the reference direct to PGRApplicants@exeter.ac.uk quoting the studentship reference number.
• Names of two referees familiar with your academic work. You are not required to obtain references yourself. We will request references directly from your referees if you are shortlisted.
