Doctoral student with focus on combustion modelling in battery systems during thermal runaway
Faculty of Engineering, LTH, Department of Energy Sciences
Field:Energy Technology, Chemical Engineering, Fluid Mechanics
APPLICATION DEADLINE: 02.May.2024
Research subject
Energy Sciences
Work duties
This project is focused on the development of high-fidelity reacting flow models to investigate thermal runaway in battery cells, pack, modules, and systems. Generally speaking, thermal runaway is a chain reaction that leads to the uncontrolled release of battery cell energy, which in turn can lead to fires that are difficult to extinguish. The project will be undertaken in close collaborations between Northvolt and LU. The aim with the doctoral project is to develop next generation simulation methodology to predict thermal runaway on the cell level. The combustion and gas model developed on the cell level will then feed into the work to accurately predict thermal runaway on pack, module, and system levels.
The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties will also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).
Admission requirements
A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if the applicant:
- has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
- has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or
- has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
- A person meets the specific admission requirements for third cycle studies in Energy Sciences if the applicant has:
- at least 90 credits in the subject of the third cycle programme, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses of relevance to the subject and 30 credits from a second-cycle degree project of relevance to the subject
- a Master's degree of relevance to the field
Additional requirements:
- Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
Assessment criteria
Selection for third-cycle studies is based on the student’s potential to profit from such studies. The assessment of potential is made primarily on the basis of academic results from the first and second cycle. Special attention is paid to the following:
- Knowledge and skills relevant to the thesis project and the subject of study.
- An assessment of ability to work independently and to formulate and tackle research problems.
- Written and oral communication skills.
- Other experience relevant to the third-cycle studies, e.g. professional experience.
Other assessment criteria:
- Good knowledge of electrochemical processes in batteries.
- Knowledge of heat transfer and experience of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
- Ability to communicate with researchers in other research fields.
Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant, through experience and skills, is deemed to have the abilities necessary for successfully completing the third cycle programme.
We offer
Lund University is a public authority which means that employees get particular benefits, generous annual leave and an advantageous occupational pension scheme. Read more on the University website about being a Lund University employeeWork at Lund University.
Terms of employment
Only those admitted to third cycle studies may be appointed to a doctoral studentship. Third cycle studies at LTH consist of full-time studies for 4 years. A doctoral studentship is a fixed-term employment of a maximum of 5 years (including 20% departmental duties). Doctoral studentships are regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), chapter 5, 1-7 §§.
How to apply

Fully funded PhD Student Position in Physical Chemistry
Field: Catalysis,Electrochemistry
APPLICATION DEADLINE: 19 May, 2024
We are seeking an outstanding candidate for a PhD student position in experimental physical chemistry to work with theAmbizione group leader Dr. Bogdan Dereka. We are broadly interested in the following fundamental research directions (some exemplary references are provided):i) Battery electrolytes (seeJ. Am. Chem. Soc.2022, 144, 8591)ii) Hydrogen bonds (seeScience2021, 371, 160)iii) Unconventional photochemistry (seeNature Commun.2020, 11, 1925)iv) Catalysis on surfaces and at the interfaces
Your responsibilities
We are a young and ambitious group aiming to understand the fundamental chemical phenomena and reactivity in liquids and at interfaces that are of immense interest in many fields of basic and applied science and technology. We are located in a brand-new world-class research building and take advantage of the unique beyond state-of-the-art laser spectroscopy infrastructure developed over the years by the laboratory of Prof. Dr. Peter Hamm with whom we are closely interacting. You will have an opportunity to gain technical expertise and perform complex experiments that are available only in 1-3 places in the entire world.
You will be working in a vibrant international group of young talented scientists in a highly interdisciplinary inspiring environment. Collaboration is an indispensable part of our research. We are currently collaborating with multiple theoretical and experimental research groups across fields and countries all around the world.
Your profile
The candidate is expected to hold a Master's degree or equivalent in Chemistry/Physics/interdisciplinary Natural Sciences or a closely related field. Ultimately, it is YOUR interests, talents and aspirations that will determine which of these directions you will be pursuing during your PhD. To be successful you should demonstrate proven academic excellence and passion for research, be ambitious, driven by curiosity and think outside of the box. You must have strong independent learning skills and be open to growth. Strong command of English is required in both oral and written communication. Expertise in programming/spectroscopy/surface science/electrochemistry is welcome.
What we offer
You will have opportunities to develop various soft skills necessary for a future scientist and present your research at national and international scholarly meetings. Career planning and counseling are provided.
Outside of the lab, Zurich is one of the most comfortable cities to live in and features one of the best standards of living worldwide. Your salary is determined by the Swiss National Science Foundation. Your gross salary per year starts from CHF 49'855.
Start of employment
We are committed to diversity in all its forms and welcome students from all countries. We encourage excellent candidates to apply regardless of their nationality, race, skin color, gender or any other personal identities.
Please submit your application as asingle pdf file. The application materials should include: CV, motivation letter/statement of research interests and experience, academic transcripts, names of at least two references who will send letters of recommendation directly to Dr. Dereka upon request.
Consideration of applications starts immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The starting date is flexible and will be determined upon agreement.
