Life Cycle Thinking in Public Policy

University College London|Department of Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering

博导:Dr Stijn Van Ewijk

截止日期:全年可申

资助的博士项目(全球学生)

About the Project UCL Department / Division:Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering

Location of position:Bloomsbury, London

Duration of Studentship:3.5 Years

Stipend Fully funded 3.5-year PhD studentship covering international fees, with a £21,237 per annum tax free stipend in Year 1, rising with inflation.

Vacancy Information Note: the studentship covers EU/international fees.

Life cycle thinking (LCT) informs decision-making by highlighting the environmental impacts of goods and services across the life cycle, from raw material extraction to end-of-life disposal. LCT shapes government policy both as a heuristic for problem identification and analysis, and through the generation of evidence with analytical tools, primarily life cycle assessment (LCA), to support policy design, implementation, and evaluation. LCT has gained an important role in government decision-making, but there is a lack of understanding of its role in the policy process and its effect on the success of policies. The candidate will map the use of LCT in public policy in various jurisdictions (e.g., UK, EU, globally), identify drivers and constraints for the use of LCT in the policy process, and study the success and failure of life-cycle-based policies through case study research. The outcomes of the research can support better policymaking and inform efforts to achieve a circular economy. As part of the PhD, the candidate is expected to directly engage with policymakers, including through a potential secondment at a policy organization.

The supervisory team for this position consists of Dr Stijn van Ewijk, at the Department for Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering, and Dr Will McDowall, at the UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources. The candidate will be based at the Department for Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering.

Unraveling nuclear PKA activity in neurons of mouse striatum during behavior

National University of Singapore|Biological Sciences

博导:Assoc Prof Phua Siew Cheng

截止日期:全年可申

资助的博士项目(全球学生)

About the Project

In the brain, neuromodulators adjust subcellular PKA activity to alter neuronal plasticity that underlies memory formation. Here, we hypothesize that nuclear and cytosolic PKA in neurons may differentially influence locomotion and learning behavior encoded by the striatum, and we pursue this using in vivo fluorescence imaging and optogenetic approaches. Accordingly, we present preliminary results using a nuclear-targeted biosensor to reveal PKA signals in vitro and in vivo. Knowledge gained here will improve molecular understanding of how an imbalance of neuromodulators in neuropsychiatric disorders e.g. schizophrenia may manifest as altered behavioral states due to dysregulated PKA spatiotemporal kinetics.

All applicants must possess at least four years of undergraduate study or three years of undergraduate study with a Mastersdegree. We consider an applicant's Grade Point Average (GPA) animportant factor in assessing their suitability.

All PhD applicants must submit GRE

(Graduate Record Examinations) scores(https://nusgs.nus.edu.sg/admissions/). The minimum score for GRE (General Test) should be Verbal and Quantitative Abilities: total score of 320, Analytical Writing: 3.5.

As the medium of instruction at NUS is in English, applicants whose native tongue or medium of undergraduate instruction is not English, should submit TOEFL/IELTS (Academic Test) scores as evidence of their proficiency in the English Language. The minimum TOEFL score is 580 (Paper-based Test), 260 (Computer-based Test) and 85 (Internet-based Test). The minimum IELTS score is 6.

Although you could feel free to discuss potential projects with individual professors in our Department, your application will only be evaluated by the Graduate Committee in the Department. Only when you are recruited by the Department, you will have a chance to rotate in different labs and eventually choose your supervisors.

You may apply via Graduate Admission Systems (GDA3) athttps://gradapp.nus.edu.sg/apply.
