About the Project:

The PhD students will be working in the Mathematical Insights into Algorithms for Optimization (MIAO) group headed byJakob Nordström, which is active at both the University of Copenhagen and Lund University on either side of the Øresund Bridge.

Job description

The positions are available for period of 3-5 years, depending on your current education level as discussed further below, andyour key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are to:

  • Manage and carry through your research project.

  • Complete and pass the MSc education in accordance with the curriculum of the MSc programme (only if you are attending the integrated MSc and PhD programme).

  • Complete PhD courses corresponding to approximately 30 ECTS (1/2 full-term equivalent).

  • Teach and disseminate your research.

  • Participate in research exchange by working at another research institution, preferably abroad, for a few months.

  • Write scientific articles aimed at high-impact conferences and journals.

  • Write and defend your PhD thesis on the basis of your research project.

Who are we looking for?

To be eligible to apply for these positions, applicants need to have or be about to obtain either a BSc or an MSc degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related field. The successful candidates are expected to have a strong background and passionate interest in mathematics and theoretical computer science, as demonstrated by excellent grades in relevant courses, or by results at the Olympiads of Mathematics or Informatics, or by publications in relevant internationally recognized conferences or journals. Problem solving skills and creativity are a must. For candidates interested in applied research, strong programming skills are required.

Applicants need to be highly motivated for doctoral studies; should possess the ability to work independently and perform critical analysis, and also have good levels of communicative abilities and English language skills.

The working language of the group is English, and knowledge of English is also fully sufficient to navigate life in Denmark in general. It might also be worth mentioning that Denmark routinely scores at the absolute top in rankings of quality of life such as, e.g., the OECD Better Life Indexhttp://www.oecdbetterlifeindex.org.

The PhD programme

Depending of your level of education, you can undertake the PhD programme as either:

Option A:Athree year full-time studywithin the framework ofthe regular PhD programme(5+3 scheme),if you alreadyhave an educationequivalent to a relevant Danish master’s degree.

Option B: An upto five year full-time study programmewithin the framework oftheintegrated MSc and PhDprogramme(the 3+5 scheme),if you do not have an educationequivalent to a relevant Danish master´s degree– but youhavean educationequivalent to a Danish bachelors´s degree.

Position as PhD Fellow in Sustainable Innovation in Multinational Enterprises

About the Project:

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated individual who has a deep interest and passion for the research area, combined with intellectual curiosity and a strong desire to learn, as well as contribute to new knowledge, to join our team as a Doctoral Researcher. This PhD position presents a unique opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research focused on sustainable innovation in multinational enterprises(MNEs) and global value chains(GVCs). The research aims to enlighten practitioners, academics, and policymakers about the intricacies and prospects presented by eco-centric international business model innovation in MNEs. The goal is to generate practical recommendations that bolster the sustainability of international business practices, thereby enhancing economic, environmental, and social performance across MNEs and their extensive GVCs.

The project can explore a range of issues related to sustainable innovation, including but not limited to:

  • MNEs’ sustainability-driven business model innovation, with a specific on emerging economies.
  • Barriers to the adoption and implementation of sustainability-driven business models in international markets and the strategies employed by MNEs to overcome these.
  • The role of technological innovation and digitalization in enabling green transition and sustainable innovation.
  • Sustainable innovation in global value chains and ecosystems.
  • The role of human resources, incentives, rewards, and performance evaluation mechanisms in sustainable innovation.

The candidate will enjoy the autonomy to tailor their PhD research topic within the broader topic of sustainable innovation in MNEs, affording a unique opportunity to marry personal academic interests and expertise with the overarching objectives of the project.

During the period of enrolment, the candidate is required to stay in China for a total period of 12 months(with the possibility to divide the 12 months stay into shorter stays over the period of three years). During the stay in China the candidate is expected to contribute to teaching at the Sino-Danish Center in Beijing, to conduct field work and other research activities while also engaging with the research environment at University of Chinese Academy of Sciences(UCAS).

As per the SDC framework agreement, this particular position, as outlined in this announcement, is not open to Chinese citizens. Instead, Chinese citizens are invited to apply for available SDC PhD positions through UCAS.

Key responsibilities:

Your main tasks will be to:

  • Conduct original research under the guidance of a supervisory team.
  • Prepare and publish research papers in peer-reviewed journals
  • Present and share research discoveries at both national and international forums, including conferences and seminars, specifically designed to engage and inform a diverse audience of academics, practitioners, and policymakers.
  • Assist in the teaching and supervision of undergraduate and master’s students.
  • Engage actively in the research community at both Aalborg University and UCAS

Qualification requirementsPhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master’s degree, or expect to have obtained the Master’s degree before the employment date(Statement from thesis supervisor, verified transcripts, thesis contract and documentation of the date of the exam must be enclosed). According to the PhD Order, the PhD study comprises among other requirements: Participation in active research environments, including stays at other, mainly foreign, research institutions, private research enterprises etc.

General informationIt is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at The Doctoral School of Social Sciences and Humanities, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of 27 August 2013(PhD Order). According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.
