秋季已备辩题分析

2024秋季常规赛 | JUNIOR WSD已备辩题解析发布!

The motion“This House supports the narrative that parenthood is about sacrifice”touches upon the values and responsibilities associated with parenting, and how society views the role of a parent.

Proposition 正方

For the proposition, teams should argue that sacrifice is key to parenthood because of the expected responsibilities and commitments involved. Parents often give up personal goals, ambitions, or even financial stability for the sake of their children’s well-being. Highlight the physical, emotional, and financial costs of raising a child, such as sleepless nights, less personal time, and reallocation of resources (money, time, etc.) from personal interests to a child’s needs (education, health, etc.). Discuss the moral and ethical responsibility parents feel to prioritize their children's happiness and success over their own.

It’s useful to emphasize that sacrifice is a positive narrative that encourages parents to be selfless. This narrative aligns with societies expectations of parents to put the child’s future first, leading to more responsible parenting and better outcomes for children.

Opposition 反方

For the opposition, teams should focus on the detrimental effects of framing parenthood solely as sacrifice. Show how such a narrative, places a lot of pressure on parents to give up their own needs and happiness, leading to negative outcomes such as burnout, depression, or broken relationships. Parents should be seen as role models who demonstrate a balance between self-care and caring for their children, showing that pursuing personal growth or career aspirations does not make them less capable as parents.

Rather than sacrifice, show how parenthood could be framed as an opportunity for growth, teaching, and joy, emphasizing cooperation and partnership within the whole family.

The second motion“This House would rather grow up before the popularization of social media”invites a discussion on the impact of social media on a child's development, and whether it does more harm than good.

Proposition 正方

For the proposition, teams should argue that growing up without social media leads to a healthier and more authentic upbringing. Point out how, before social media, children were less exposed to pressures such as cyberbullying, and unrealistic beauty standards. This meant less comparison with others and fewer distractions, allowing for more meaningful face-to-face interactions and a focus on real-world experiences as the child develops.

Proposition teams can emphasize on the negative mental health effects associated with social media, such as anxiety, validation seeking, and depression.

Opposition 反方

For the opposition, teams should argue that social media provides significant benefits that enhance the upbringing of today’s generation. Define social media as a tool that encourages self-expression, allows for the formation of friendships, and exposes young people to diverse ideas and knowledge the world has to offer that would be inaccessible otherwise. Highlight how social media empowers individuals to find communities of support, be it for mental health, hobbies, or social reasons, allowing for a sense of belonging that goes beyond boarders.

Opposition can also argue navigating the digital world is a critical skill in the modern world, and social media equips kids with a head start in this regard.

For the third and final motion, “This House believes the rise of food delivery apps has done more harm than good to the service sector”we explore the economic, social, and labor impacts of food delivery apps on the service industry.

Proposition 正方

For the proposition, teams should argue that the rise of food delivery apps has negatively impacted the service sector in various ways. First, emphasize the financial burden placed on restaurants due to high commission fees charged by apps like Uber eats and Ele.me. Additionally, highlight how apps contributeto a shift away from traditional dining practices, leading to fewer in-person customers, which can harm the livelihood of restaurant staff, especially waiters and servers, who depend on tips and in-house service for income.

Opposition 反方

For the opposition, teams should argue that food delivery apps have revolutionized the service sector in many ways. First, they have expanded the market for a lot of restaurants, especially during times when in-person dining was restricted, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic. Restaurants can reach a broader audience, including people who may not have visited their establishment otherwise, boosting overall sales and income.

Opps can further highlight how apps have created flexible job opportunities for many people, especially those who may not be able to work traditional jobs. Delivery apps provide a source of income for students, part-time workers, and those who prefer or need flexible hours and hence forth this technological advancement should be embraced.
