#1
法律
Law
Resolved: The United States should enforce antitrust laws against tech giants.
Antitrust topics revolve around questions of dominance and control of technological sectors. Have FAANG companies (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Google) become too big? Do they control so much of their markets that they constitute a monopoly? Antitrust topics revolve around these questions of dominance and control of technological sectors. Pro teams must demonstrate that antitrust laws are not only necessary, but also an effective solution. Con teams could argue that FAANG companies face growing competition, or that breaking companies apart create more problems than benefits.
#2
政治
Politics
Resolved: Governments should implement a Universal Basic Income.
Many countries face a similar problem of rising unemployment. In addition, the threat of Artificial Intelligence replacing workers compounds the problem. Consequently, calls for a Universal Basic Income that unconditionally guarantees a livable wage to everyone, regardless of their employment status, have grown exponentially. Should governments provide living wages to everyone, even if they do not work? Would UBI programs take away money from existing welfare programs and result in a net decrease in support for the poor?
#3
International Relations
Resolved: Military intervention by the African Union does more good than harm.
Pro and con teams will clash over the necessity and consequences of military intervention in Africa. Under what conditions should the African Union militarily intervene in the affairs of a member state? Is genocide the only case where intervention would be a just solution? Is military intervention an appropriate or effective response to urgent humanitarian issues?
#4
科技
Technology
Resolved:Expanding access to human gene editing technologies is more beneficial than harmful.
Should humans have access to gene editing technologies that could alter DNA to prevent certain traits? Would gene editing be limited to only lifesaving or life-improving medical cases? Could individuals and/or governments use gene editing to promote ideal racial, ethic, or beauty standards? Pro and con teams must weigh the impacts associated with human gene editing technologies.
#5
Economic Policy
Resolved: International financial institutions should prioritize debt cancellation over new loans to developing nations.
International financial institutions like the IMF and World Bank currently prioritize promotion of loans, often on the conditions of structural adjustment policies in recipient nations. Pro teams would instead defend cancellation, not relief, of debt. Con teams could argue about the economic costs associated with cancellation, or the harmful ways that countries would spend their newfound budgets.
