In my estimation, social media influencers exert a nothing but pathological impact on their followers. I take Paul’s point that influencers sometimes distort users’ sense of what is valuable and facilitate irrational purchasing decisions. But psychological manipulation of fashion isn’t nearly their most egregious error. It is on the political front that social media influencers are most at fault—they are guilty, among other sins, of ideological oversimplification and politicization of culture. I think of Twitter in particular, where cheap hashtags and virtue-signaling behavior have reduced discourse to episodes of moral panic and manufactured outrage. Consider JK Rowling: for pointing out the plain absurdity of avoiding the term “woman” in everyday parlance, the Twitter mob devoured her with ideological buzzwords and vile threats. Post-George Floyd, the term “influencer” has become synonymous with “activist” and, by extension, the cancel culture that is part and parcel of today’s media and academia. Of course, (pre-Musk) Twitter and Facebook, leaning but hard left, shouldn’t get away scot-free; it is they who enabled the phenomenon of trial by social media and, through their demented algorithms, coated influencers' narcissism and pathology with the veneer of respectability. Our dependence on social media communication—now more performative than private—may yet doom us, with influencers at the heart of it all.
