Sentence 1

In the face of the frequent and often vivid media coverage, it is likely that children will have formed ideas about rainforests —— what and where they are, why they are important, what endangers them—— independent of any formal tuition.

Sentence 2

Jame Boswell, his biographer, described the garret where Johnson worked as “fitted up like a counting house” with a long desk running down the middle at which the copying  clerks would work standing up.

1. 首先找出句子中的动词(“described”, “worked”, “would work”)和从句引导词(“where”,“at which”);

2. 其次找到2个定语从句,剩下的含有谓语动词的部分即主句部分——“Jame Boswell described the garret as “fitted up like a counting house”。

3. 需要注意的是同位语的用法——名词后面跟的名词短语,对前面的名词起解释说明作用,所以“his biographer” 是在对“Jame Boswell”的身份进行解释;

4. 介词短语作为后置定语则可以对前面的内容起到修饰作用,“with a long desk running down the middle”是在对“counting house”进行修饰
