美国现实主义文学有多“现实”？

文学流派是托福常考的内容，2021年托福阅读真题中有一篇关于美国现实主义文学的文章。那究竟什么叫现实主义realism，什么叫自然主义naturalism，他们和浪漫主义romanticism有什么区别？又有哪些代表作家和作品呢？本期跟着通才Christine老师一起来看看吧！

首先先认识19C美国著名现实主义作家——马克·吐温Mark Twain

2021年托福阅读原文：

The economic depressionin the late-nineteenth-century United Statescontributed significantlytoa growing movement in literature toward realism and naturalism. After the 1870's, a number of important authors began to reject the romanticism that had prevailed immediately following the Civil War of 1861-1865 and turned instead to realism. Determined to portray life as it was,with fidelity to real lifeand accurate representation without idealization, they studied local dialects, wrote stories which focused on life in specific regions of the country, and emphasized the "true" relationships between people.In doing so, they reflected broader trends in the society, such as industrialization, evolutionary theorywhich emphasized the effect of the environment on humans, and the influence of science.

1865年至1914年间的这段时期在美国文学史上称为现实主义时期。这是一场反映美国精神的美国文学运动，尤其是美国小说。现实主义是对浪漫主义的一种反动。它正视现实，远离空想。

内战之后，人们对战争的痛苦记忆、对英雄形象的幻灭和实际生活的无情现实，使得整个民族都反对浪漫主义，美国人对浪漫主义思想已感厌倦。新一代作家不满意老一代的浪漫主义思想，产生了新的创作灵感。

他们的特点是对现实生活有浓厚的兴趣，企图对生活的各个方面作出他们的解释，主张客观现实，摒弃主观偏颇、理想主义和浪漫主义的色彩。人们的兴趣现在已转移到了日常生活的方方面面，注意到现实的野蛮、肮脏，直接公开描写阶级斗争。

Samuel Clemens, who adopted the pen name Mark Twain, became the country's most outstanding realist author, observing life around him with a humorous and skepticaleye. In his stories and novels, Twain drew on his own experiencesand used dialect and common speechinstead of literary language,touching offa major change inAmerican prosestyle.

马克吐温的小说中有很多让人乍一眼看不明白的句子，但知道稍微念一下就读懂了，这就是他运用dialect和common speech的体现。要知道，现实主义描写的更多是乡村、底层人民的生活，他们自然说不出非常formal且elegant的话，这也是英文阅读原著小说能体会到的满满细节，灵动有趣。

Other writers became impatient even with realism. Pushingevolutionary theory to its limits, they wrote of a world in which a cruel and merciless environment determined human fate. These writers, called naturalists, often focused on economic hardship, studying people struggling with poverty, and other aspects of urban and industrial life. Naturalists brought to their writing a passion for direct and honest experience.

Theodore Dreiser, the foremost naturalist writer, in novels such as Sister Carrie, grimly portrayed a dark world in which human beings were tossed aboutby forces beyond their understanding or control. Dreiser thought that writers should tell the truth about human affairs, notfabricateromance, and Sister Carrie, he said, was "not intended as a piece of literary craftsmanship, but was a picture of conditions."

参考译文：

西奥多·德莱塞(Theodore Dreiser)是最著名的自然主义作家，他在《嘉莉妹妹》(Sister Carrie)等小说中，冷酷地描绘了一个黑暗的世界，在这个世界里，人类被他们无法理解或控制的力量所左右。德莱塞认为，作家应该讲述人类事务的真相，而不是编造浪漫故事。他说，《嘉莉妹妹》“不是想要成为一件文学作品，而是一幅境况的图景”。

但如果把语法修复了，反而没有那种符合乡村莽孩人设的感觉了，这就是dialect的文字力量。语言真的是很美妙的东西，希望大家都能get到其中的乐趣！
