约翰-洛克写作竞赛由美国普林斯顿大学和英国牛津大学联合主办，培养优秀学生具备独立思考、知识深度、清晰推理、批判性分析和有说服力的能力。通过参赛，学会可以积累知识，提高论证技巧。还能有机会让专家对他们的作品进行评估。
约翰-洛克征文比赛邀请学生在学校课程范围之外探索各种富有挑战性和趣味性的问题。所有写作奖都由来自牛津大学和普林斯顿大学等一流大学的资深学者组成的评审团进行评审。
评委们将从哲学、政治学、经济学、历史学、心理学、神学和法学等七个学科类别中分别选出他们最喜爱的文章，然后评选出各学科最佳作品大奖的获得者。
