Seminar 1: Spandex, Spangles, and Stripes: Race, Gender, and the Superhero
Professor Rene Esparaza, professor of gender studies and sociology at Washington University in St. Louis
Seminar incorporates psychology, media studies, sociology, gender studies, culture studies, anthropology, literature, and philosophy.
Session 1: Friday, March 15 at 10am New York, 2pm London, 4pm Central Africa time, 5pm Istanbul, 7:30pm India, 10pm China.
Session 2: Friday, March 15 at 6pm California, 9pm New York // Sunday, March 17 at 9am China, Noon Melbourne.
Cultural meanings attached to gender and sexuality shift over time depending upon sociopolitical and economic changes. Renowned philosopher Umberto Eco once asserted that superheroes embody values such as rugged individualism, the Protestant work ethic, moral exceptionalism, and the pursuit of greatness. What do the widespread appeal and prevalence of superheroes in cinema and television reveal about contemporary global culture? In this seminar, Professor Esparza will lead an interactive lecture and discussion focused on the concept of the superhero, as both a character archetype and a cultural phenomenon and how political dynamics and cultural norms have influenced the portrayal and reception of iconic superheroes like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. We will also examine the significance of Wonder Woman in the context of women’s empowerment movements.
Seminar 2: Computational Medicine: Applications of Machine Learning in Understanding Biological Systems
Professor Ahmet Ay, professor of mathematics and biology at Colgate University
Seminar incorporates computer science, mathematics, engineering, neuroscience, psychology, biology, and chemistry.
Session 1: Saturday, March 16 at 10am New York, 2pm London, 4pm Central Africa time, 5pm Istanbul, 7:30pm India, 10pm China.
Session 2: Saturday, March 16 at 6pm California, 9pm New York // Sunday, March 17 at 9am China, Noon Melbourne.
Subtle changes in biological systems, such as a slight decrease in protein levels, can profoundly affect many biological processes and lead to human diseases such as cancer. However, a quantitative understanding of how biological systems work is far from comprehensive. Obtaining this quantitative understanding with only experimentation is challenging. Computational Medicine proposes a more comprehensive solution to this crucial problem. Computational Medicine is an emerging interdisciplinary field that employs quantitative approaches such as mathematical modeling, machine learning, and computer programming to better understand the mechanisms, diagnosis, and treatment of human diseases. In this seminar, Professor Ay will lead an interactive lecture using two case studies, each of which employ machine learning techniques to analyze biological systems: analyzing the impact of circadian clock gene variations on depression and understanding the influence of microRNAs on cancer.
