WhatisVericantPre-Interview(VPI)?Whatisthepurpose?
The Vericant Pre-Interview refers to a practice interview conducted before the official interview. Its purpose is to provide applicants with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the interview environment and process.
We often receive feedback from students that the Pre-interview helps prepare them to be calmer and more confident for the official interview. It offers them the opportunity to further improve their interview skills as well. A Pre-interview is undoubtedly the best choice and experience for all students, especially for those applying to schools that only accept the first interview result, making the Pre-interview an indispensable option.
SpecialNotice:The Vericant Pre-interview is exclusively for applicants to all K-12 levels (elementary, middle, high school, and summer programs). The results of the Pre-interview cannot be sent to schools, and there must be a gap of more than 14 days between the Pre-interview day and the standard interview. (For more details, please refer to https://vericant.cn/faq-vpi/)
Vericant interviews are continuously being improved and with the approach of the 2025 interview season, Vericant pre-interviewwill also start implementing new adjustments from April 10th.The main changes are as follows:
1.The writing sample prompts will have a two-choice prompt instead of three.
The types of prompts are Analytical and Practical. For example:
- Analytical:“Do you think parents should allow their children to make their own choices? Why or why not?”This prompt is intended to assess the candidate's logical thinking, analytical abilities, and the articulation of their viewpoints.
-
Practical: “Your friend has asked to play a game they’ve never played before. How would you teach them to play?” This allows students to demonstrate their mentoring abilities, communication skills, and creative problem-solving methods. Such changes not only enrich the assessment dimensions but also provide students with opportunities to showcase their strengths.
2.Changes in the writing sample word count limit(newly added)The writing sample word count limit has been changed from 3,000 characters to 3,600 characters, including spaces, punctuation marks, etc.
3. Implementing a grading system for writing
In addition to the Spoken English Evaluation (SEE), the Vericant interview now includes a graded writing component, known as the Writing Sample Evaluation (WSE). The grading criteria for the pre-interview are consistent with those of the standard interview. However, the pre-interview scores are presented as a range (e.g., 4.7 - 5.2), and the results of the pre-interview cannot be sent to schools.
The Writing Sample Evaluation (WSE) assesses candidates' written English skills, assigning scores from 0 to 6 (to one decimal place, e.g., 4.3, 2.2).The WSE score reflects the following four aspects of English written usage, namely:
① Range of Vocabulary (breadth of vocabulary, including its accurate application in context and understanding of definitions)
② Grammar Control (the ability to form sentences using standard grammatical rules)
③ Coherence (the ability to organize content effectively, particularly through smoothtransitions, appropriate paragraphing, and the use of cohesive devices)
④ Task fulfillment (degree of understanding of the given prompt and the capability to respond with relevant, detailed, and illustrative explanations.
(WSEGradeandScoringExplanationTable)
4.InterviewTypeCannotBeChanged
Once the pre-interview is successfully scheduled, it cannot be changed to a standard interview.
5.Remote interviews in the Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan regions
·Remote interviews in the Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan regions can be completed at home, without the need to go to a third-party location designated by Vericant.
· Students participating in remote interviews in the Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan regions must hold a Hong Kong, Macau, or Taiwan (permanent) Resident Identity Card or a passport from Hong Kong, Macau, or Taiwan. If the required documents cannot be provided as stipulated, the interview will ultimately be deemed invalid, even if it has been scheduled or completed, and no refund will be issued.
Overall, the adjustments made to the writing sample of the Vericant interview not only enhance the efficiency and precision of the interview process but also improve the scientific rigor and comprehensiveness of the evaluation. These changes further highlight the personalization and diversity of the Vericant interview. It has evolved from being merely a one-way evaluation process to a platform that helps students have more opportunities to demonstrate their unique personalities and comprehensive abilities to schools.
KindReminder:
To ensure your interview proceeds smoothly, please bring your interview confirmation (applicable only to students attending in-person interviews), relevant identification documents, and your Vericant account username and password to the interview.
Please arrive at the interview location (or enter the online interview meeting room) at least 15 minutes early. Being more than five minutes late will be considered forfeiting the interview, and no refund will be given.
The adjustments to the Vericant standard interview will be announced at the end of May 2024.
