Once confined to the realms of science fiction and futuristic speculation, AI-generated avatars—hyperrealistic "digital doubles" of actors and celebrities—are now a tangible part of media production, offering new possibilities for creativity, convenience, and commercial gain. These virtual stand-ins, trained on hours of video footage and photos, can perform in advertisements, instructional videos, and even films—often without the physical presence or active participation of the real-life individual. The implications for actors, studios, and audiences alike are immense.

全天营业的替身

After just an hour-long session in a studio, Finley' s avatar was ready to star in videos for marketing, training, onboarding, and more. His clone, ageless and tireless, could potentially earn income for him while he' s on vacation, asleep, or even retired. It might even speak languages he’s never learned. " You can be in two places at one time," Finley noted, describing what many see as the core appeal of digital duplication: the ability to scale oneself across time and space without physical limitation. For many performers, the opportunity to license their image is increasingly being viewed as a viable side hustle, similar to sponsored posts or podcast ads. Ian Beacraft, a futurist who now co-hosts a tech news show with his avatar, believes this trend will only grow. "Soon, instead of a book deal, you' ll get a digital twin deal," he predicts.

But beyond individual freelancers and emerging startups, major brands are now tapping into the power of AI clones to streamline their marketing efforts. The celebrity endorsement business is undergoing a quiet but profound transformation. In a recent ad for a Chinese dairy company, soccer star Kylian Mbappé appears to sprint across a stadium. In reality, he never set foot on the set. The person on screen is a body double wearing an "AI-generated digital mask" created by Brask Doubles, a content agency that trains its AI systems on thousands of images and videos of stars like Mbappé and Lionel Messi. With the actors' permission, their facial likenesses are mapped onto stand-ins, resulting in virtual performances that are nearly indistinguishable from the real thing. This setup allows brands to work around scheduling conflicts, avoid costly travel, and still deliver high-impact content. It' s not only efficient—it' s game-changing.

In addition to high-profile marketing, AI clones are now being used to solve practical production challenges. AI avatars are also appearing in explainer videos, corporate training modules, and online education. Berlitz, the language learning company, recently created 20,000 video lessons using eight "virtual instructors." Meanwhile, Synthesia, another AI video company, claims to work with over 15,000 corporate clients, including 35% of the Fortune 100. These companies argue that AI clones provide scalable, consistent, and cost-effective solutions to modern communication needs.

At the same time, the Writers Guild of America is also raising alarms about AI' s ability to generate content, leading to historic dual labor strikes—the first time in over 60 years that both unions have taken simultaneous action. The heart of the debate lies in control, consent, and compensation. Who gets to decide how a person' s likeness is used, and for how long? How do you ensure fair pay when an actor' s virtual twin can be reused indefinitely?

Studios still rely on body doubles and voice actors to ground these digital constructs in realism. But this dependence may be short-lived. Generative AI is improving rapidly, and companies like Runway are developing tools that can generate convincing video from just text and images. These advances have already fueled the rise of deepfakes—both entertaining and alarming—including manipulated political videos and fictional ad appearances by Bruce Willis, which led to public confusion over whether the actor had sold his digital rights. The possibility of such misuse makes the establishment of ethical standards and legal safeguards more urgent than ever.
